Allergy priority for RCGP
Allergy as a clinical priority for the RCGP 2010 - 2012
One of the fundamental things the BSACI Primary Care Group was set up to do was to help get allergy recognised as an important priority in primary care where it is often poorly diagnosed and managed.
The Royal College of General Practitioners supports a number of clinical priorities every year that they identify requiring improvement. Clinical priorities are identified via a call for nominations on an annual basis. Following submission of a detailed proposal highlighting the importance of allergy and making the case for RCGP support, the BSACI was delighted to hear that in March 2009 the proposal had been successful and that allergy is to be an agreed clinical priority for the College over the next three years (2010-2012).
The next step is for the RCGP to appoint a Clinical Champion to work to an agreed plan with their Clinical Innovation and Research Centre (CIRC) Board. A number of applicants have been supported for the post from leaders in the allergy field. The announcement of the successful candidate will be in autumn.
For other areas like the Isle of Man is a local NHS/DHSS Allergy service not a priority at present and it is difficult to see DHSS resources becoming available for this short-medium term given the range of other services that have been classified as a priority and yet have not been funded to date. The DHSS on the Isle of Man cannot put an exact timeframe on when they might plan a local Allergy service.
Allthough a local private allergy service will not necessarily be a preferred provider for local residents requiring specialist allergy advise or treatment on the NHS, a local policy will likely be developed by the Clinical Recommendation Commitee around allergy services if such a private service is introduced.
